Waterways (All Ages)
Have you ever imagined yourself as a scientist on the trail of the American crocodile? In the dark of night, you would pull on your bug jacket, slip over the boat’s gunwale into Florida Bay mud, and slog up towards dry ground on one of Florida Bay’s backcountry keys. Lit by your flashlight beam, three-toed prints and a tail drag that look like they’re straight out of the Age of Dinosaurs would tell you about the crocodile’s comings and goings and the location of her nest. If you’re lucky, the nest has just hatched and there are dozens of baby crocs to measure and mark. Waterways travels behind the scenes with scientists, conservationists, fishing guides, divers, and historians—people who know the Keys and are working to protect them. Recent episodes have taken people on journeys to tag sea turtles for conservation, to study roseate spoobills in northern Florida Bay, and to track the health of the Keys’ coral reefs.
Waterways producer and director Erik Hutchins has flown two hundred feet above the ground in a chopper looking for Florida panthers. He has dove under the sea to get spectacular footage of grouper, turtles, conch, and coral. He has hung off the back end of a powerboat as it winds it way up a tight mangrove creek. But the Key West-based film-maker thinks of himself not as an adventurous cinematographer, but as a storyteller. He goes where the stories are, interviewing and spending time with the experts to bring their knowledge and experience to you. |
